What are the reasons for cat mouth odor?

There are many reasons for cat bad breath. The first consideration is the abnormal fermentation of food residues in the oral cavity. In addition, bad breath in cats may also be caused by gum disease, stomatitis, and tartar. These generally accompanied by yellow teeth, red and swollen gums, and oral pain. It is recommended to take the cat to a pet hospital for further examination and treatment in time.

Reasons for cat bad breath:

  1. Dietary factors: For example, feeding soft food for a long time can lead to a large amount of food residue remaining in the cat's oral cavity, causing bad breath due to food fermentation. It is recommended to observe the condition of the cat's mouth, feed hard cat food, and use oral care products such as mouthwash if necessary.

  2. Gingivitis: Clinical manifestations include red, swollen, and painful gums, accompanied by bad breath. It is recommended to pay attention to the cat's oral care and use oral sprays with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

  3. Stomatitis: Stomatitis is a general term for various diseases, mainly referring to oral inflammation caused by different reasons, such as physical and chemical stimulation, bacterial infection, and viral infection. Among them, physical and chemical stimulation is less common, and the main cause is considered to be herpes virus infection, which is more common in young cats or cats who have not been vaccinated against infectious diseases. Clinical manifestations mainly include oral ulcers, peculiar smell, pain, and reluctance to eat.

  4. Tartar: In cats over 4 years old, oral odor caused by tartar is mainly considered. Tartar stimulation also causes tooth sensitivity and increased saliva production. In this case, it is recommended to consider the actual condition of the cat. If the cat meets the surgical requirements, a teeth cleaning surgery can be performed. After the cleaning surgery, special attention should be paid to the cat's dental health.
