What are the reasons for dogs crying?
There are many reasons for dogs to cry, and some dog breeds are naturally prone to tears, such as Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, and Teddy Bears. In this case, there is no need for medication, just wipe the tears away with paper towels every day. In addition, factors such as eye diseases, foreign objects, bacterial or viral infections, dietary reasons, and emotions may also cause dogs to cry. Owners should pay close attention and consult a veterinarian if the dog has symptoms such as pus-filled eye secretions, red conjunctiva, and other abnormalities.
- Eye diseases
When dogs suffer from eye diseases such as conjunctivitis and keratitis, they may also experience tearfulness. Clinical symptoms may include redness, itching, increased secretions, and swelling. Severe cases may cause mild photophobia.
Owners can use wet paper towels to wipe the dog's eyes, but avoid using dry ones as they can stimulate the tear ducts and cause more liquid secretion. If the symptoms are severe, use antibacterial and anti-inflammatory eye ointments under a veterinarian's guidance.
- Foreign objects
When hair, ingrown eyelashes, dust, and other foreign objects enter a dog's eye, they can stimulate the eye and cause tears. In this case, owners can rinse the dog's eyes with physiological saline. If there are ingrown eyelashes, it is recommended to use tweezers to remove them or seek surgical treatment at a hospital. Apply antibacterial ointments afterwards. Regularly maintain a dry and clean living environment to prevent this from happening.
- Bacterial and viral infections
When dog eyes are infected with bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, they can cause inflammation and lead to tearfulness. This type of disease is usually accompanied by other symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea, and vomiting, which are dangerous for dogs. Early treatment is essential for better results. Owners should consult a veterinarian immediately when they notice abnormalities in their dogs.
- Dietary reasons
Excessive oil and salt in a dog's diet can also cause tearfulness and tear stains. Owners should adjust their dog's diet structure in time, keeping it light and avoiding human food.
- Emotional distress
Dogs can also cry when they are emotionally distressed, just like humans. Puppies who have recently left their mothers may cry due to fear of the unfamiliar environment and longing for their mothers. Owners should spend more time playing with their dogs to help them adapt to their new surroundings. Additionally, if a dog's favorite owner leaves suddenly or scolds it, the dog may cry from sadness.
