What are the reasons for a dog's diarrhea with blood?

The main causes of diarrhea with blood in dogs are:

  1. Food issues: For example, dogs may accidentally eat sharp bones or red foods.
  2. Gastrointestinal problems: Dogs with weaker digestive abilities in their intestines may experience diarrhea with blood due to seasonal changes or sudden changes in diet.
  3. Parasite issues: Excessive parasites accumulated in the dog's body or external parasite infections can also cause diarrhea with blood.

The causes and solutions for dog diarrhea with blood are as follows:

  1. Food issues. If a dog eats fish with bones, chicken or duck meat with sharp bones, or other sharp objects like steel wool, these sharp objects can easily scratch the dog's gastrointestinal tract, leading to diarrhea with blood. It is recommended to remove and boil the bones before feeding the dog. Be cautious of the dog's movements to prevent it from accidentally eating steel wool or wires. If the dog eats a large amount of red food, such as tomatoes, it can also cause diarrhea, with stools showing a blood-like red color. It is advised to reduce the dog's intake of such foods.

  2. Gastrointestinal problems. Some dogs have fragile gastrointestinal tracts. Seasonal changes, sudden changes in feed, or excessive intake may stimulate the dog's gastrointestinal tract, causing diarrhea or even blood. It is recommended to feed the dog a suitable amount of probiotics, either mixed in warm boiled water or food, to help replenish beneficial bacteria in the dog's intestines and promote intestinal peristalsis. You can also feed the dog easy-to-digest and absorbable rice congee or minced meat congee to help the dog recover from the gastrointestinal discomfort before resuming its normal diet.

  3. Parasite issues. If the owner hasn't given the dog internal parasite prevention for a long time or often feeds the dog raw meat, it can lead to excessive parasites in the dog's body or external parasite infections, which destroy the gastrointestinal structure and cause diarrhea with blood. It is recommended to collect the dog's stool and bring it to a pet hospital for fecal examination to identify the type of parasite, and then use internal parasite prevention drugs under the guidance of a veterinarian.
