What causes a female cat to have blood in its urine?

There are many causes of hematuria in female cats, mainly including bladder hematuria, urethral hematuria, and extrarenal hematuria. Bladder hematuria is usually caused by bacterial cystitis, bladder trauma, and bladder calculi. Urethral hematuria is often caused by urethral calculi, urethritis, and urethral trauma. Extrarenal hematuria is mainly caused by poor placental recovery and other factors.

The main causes of hematuria in female cats are:

  1. Consider stone-related causes, such as urethral stones and bladder stones. Clinical symptoms of bladder stones include frequent urination, hematuria, and repeated urination attempts. Urethral stones can also cause severe abdominal pain, tenderness upon abdominal palpation, and other symptoms.

  2. Consider urinary tract infections, such as urethritis and cystitis. Clinical symptoms include turbid urine, hematuria, mucus, and pus. When palpating the cat's abdomen or performing cystocentesis, the cat often shows pain, restlessness, and resistance or avoidance of examination.

  3. Consider traumatic causes, such as bladder trauma and urethral trauma. Traumatic causes lead to damage to the bladder or urethral mucosa, resulting in mucosal hemorrhage and hematuria symptoms. Pain is also present, and the main causes of bladder trauma are usually impact or compression. The main causes of urethral trauma are usually related to unsound catheterization practices.

  4. Consider extrarenal hematuria, mainly including poor placental recovery, leiomyomas, and other factors.

The treatment for hematuria caused by different factors varies. It is recommended to use hemostatic and anti-inflammatory drugs while treating the underlying disease. Hemostatic drugs include those containing phenylsulfonylacetic acid, adrenaline chromic acid, etc. Antibiotics include those containing ampicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, etc.
