What's the cause of redness around a dog's mouth?

Redness around a dog's mouth may be caused by bacterial infection, internal heat, fungal infection, skin diseases caused by mites, allergies, and other reasons. When a dog has this condition, the owner should carefully check if there are any scales, ringworm patches around the mouth, and consult a pet doctor based on the dog's specific symptoms to determine the cause. Then, targeted medication treatment can be given. If possible, the dog can be taken directly to a pet hospital for examination and treatment.

  1. Bacterial infection

Dog saliva contains a large number of bacteria. If the mouth area is not cleaned promptly after eating or drinking for a long time, it will remain wet for a long time, eventually leading to bacterial infection and redness around the mouth. In this case, the owner should put a protective collar on the dog to prevent it from licking, and apply topical medication accordingly.

  1. Internal heat

If the owner feeds the dog with dry dog food or human food for a long time and the dog drinks little water, it is prone to internal heat. The most direct manifestation of internal heat in dogs is a red mouth, even sometimes with red eyes. Meanwhile, the dog may secrete a large amount of eye discharge, and the stool may become dry and black. In this case, it is necessary to consult a pet doctor promptly, give the dog cooling and detoxifying drugs, and encourage the dog to drink more water to recover slowly.

  1. Fungal infection or skin disease caused by mites

If the dog has redness around the mouth accompanied by itching, hair loss, scaling, and other symptoms, it may be a skin disease caused by fungal infection or mites. It is difficult to diagnose visually, so the owner is advised to take the dog to a pet hospital for skin scraping examination. Then, treat the dog according to the examination results, which will help the dog recover faster.

  1. Allergies

When a dog comes into contact with an allergen or eats something that causes allergies, the mouth area may also become red. In this case, the dog should be given an allergy desensitization injection, and the owner should consult a pet doctor to identify the allergen. Then, keep the dog away from the allergen, and the skin will improve over time.
