What is the cause of dog seizures?

Dog seizures may be caused by factors such as calcium deficiency, epilepsy, distemper, poisoning, dreaming, stress, and fear. It is recommended that owners take their dogs to a pet hospital promptly. If the seizure is caused by poisoning, induce vomiting and perform gastric washing immediately, followed by fluid therapy. If the seizure is caused by diseases such as epilepsy or distemper, give the dog targeted oral medications. If it's due to calcium deficiency, feed the dog calcium supplements and vitamin D, and take the dog outside frequently for sun exposure to promote calcium absorption. If it's caused by dreaming or stress, calm the dog's emotions.

  1. Calcium Deficiency

If a dog's diet is monotonous, causing a lack of calcium in the body, it can lead to seizures. If this is the case, it is recommended to use pet-specific calcium supplements to replenish the calcium needed by the body and supplement it with an appropriate amount of vitamin D to aid in calcium absorption. Additionally, if the dog recently gave birth, it may also be due to postpartum calcium deficiency, and calcium tablets can be fed to the dog to observe if the condition improves.

  1. Epilepsy

When a dog has epilepsy, it may suddenly collapse and seizure for 1-2 minutes. As the dog is unconscious during the seizure, owners should not interfere to avoid being bitten. Try to keep the dog in a quiet place, and take it to the pet hospital as soon as it stops seizuring and regains consciousness.

  1. Distemper

A dog with distemper may exhibit seizures in the later stages, along with symptoms such as runny nose, loss of appetite, lethargy, and cough. This disease is highly contagious, so immediate isolation and treatment at a pet hospital are necessary. If treated promptly, there is a good chance of recovery.

  1. Poisoning

If a dog suddenly develops seizure symptoms, the likelihood of poisoning is high, and it may also exhibit symptoms such as frothy saliva. For example, if a dog accidentally ingests toxic substances like rat poison or pesticides, it can affect the normal conduction of neural signals, causing seizures. In this case, administer detoxification drugs and perform gastric washing or enemas.

  1. Dreaming

When a dog is sleeping, it may seizure if it has a nightmare, dreams of chasing games, experiences body weightlessness, or has high mental stress. This will cause the dog's body to shake uncontrollably. This situation will not harm the dog and is a normal occurrence.

  1. Stress and Fear

If a sudden stranger visits the home or there are loud noises such as fireworks or construction, a dog may feel stressed and scared, leading to seizures. In this case, the owner needs to immediately安抚the dog's emotions to prevent a stress response.
