What is going on when a dog has a seizure?

A dog having a seizure may be caused by reasons such as calcium deficiency, cold weather, canine distemper virus infection, or nerve diseases.

  1. Calcium deficiency: Calcium is an essential element for bone development and absorption. If a dog doesn't intake enough calcium in its daily life, it can lead to osteoporosis and cause seizures. In this case, it is recommended for the owner to feed the dog with pet-specific calcium supplements and provide foods rich in calcium, such as shrimp shells.

  2. Cold weather: If the weather suddenly becomes very cold and the dog is unable to adapt, or if the dog continues to sleep on a cold ground in winter, it can cause muscle stimulation and lead to seizures. In this case, the owner should pay attention to keeping the dog warm by dressing it appropriately and making its bed more comfortable. Once the dog's body temperature returns to normal, the seizures should stop.

  3. Canine distemper virus infection or nerve diseases: If a dog is infected with the canine distemper virus or has a nerve disease, it may exhibit seizure symptoms in the later stages of the disease. In this case, it is advised to consult a veterinarian for medication and treatment. If there are medications available at home, the owner can give the dog neurostabilizers and take the dog to the vet for further processing.
