What to do about bad breath in cats

There are two types of causes for bad breath in cats: physiological and pathological. First, it's necessary to rule out pathological factors. You can open your cat's mouth to check if there is redness, swelling, and ulcers in their mouth, or if they have too much dental calculus. If either of these conditions is present, the former suggests checking the cause of stomatitis, and the latter suggests going to the hospital for dental cleaning. physiological factors are related to the cat's daily diet and can only be relieved by brushing their teeth, but it's difficult to cure fundamentally.

Why do cats have bad breath?

There are several reasons for bad breath in cats:

  1. Food-related causes, such as regularly feeding cats raw meat, liver, and canned food.
  2. Indigestion caused by gastrointestinal disorders, which can be relieved by giving cats nutrient-rich and easily digestible food.
  3. Disease factors, sometimes cats develop bad breath when suffering from oral ulcers or stomatitis.
  4. Long-term neglect of dental hygiene leads to accumulated tartar or rotting teeth, causing bad breath!

Symptoms of cat indigestion

Cats with indigestion often have bad breath, and you might notice a strong smell of breath when they wake up or burp. Other symptoms include loss of appetite, bloating, and increased bowel sounds. If cats have indigestion, they may also experience diarrhea, increased frequency of defecation, and acidic smell in the stool.

What to do about bad breath in cats

First, analyze the cause of your cat's bad breath.

  1. If the cause is due to a variety of foods or food residues in the mouth, recommend feeding your cat natural food and regularly brushing their teeth.
  2. For oral diseases such as oral ulcers, gingivitis, and stomatitis, supplement your cat's diet with vitamin B and treat with anti-inflammatory drugs. If ineffective, consult a pet hospital for treatment.
  3. During the teething period, retained old teeth can cause bad breath. It is recommended to take your cat to the hospital in time to have the old teeth removed.
