What to do if a dog is hit by a car
1. Observe the dog's mental state and assess its injuries
After a dog is hit by a car, the first step is to carefully observe the dog's mental state and assess its injuries. Then, take appropriate protective measures and timely send the dog to a pet hospital for treatment. Once the dog is sent to the hospital, the owner needs to actively cooperate with the doctor's examination and explain the process and location of the collision. Generally, the dog needs to undergo a full-body X-ray examination to see if there are any fractures, and the degree of the fracture. Additionally, a full-body CT scan is required to see if there is internal bleeding, and to determine the location of the bleeding and whether surgery is needed.
- Observe the dog's mental state and assess its injuries
After a dog is hit by a car, the owner must carefully observe the dog's mental state and assess its injuries, especially checking for bleeding, fractures, and bone fractures. It is necessary to gently touch the dog's body with both hands during the inspection to avoid causing secondary injuries.
If the dog's mental state and body are not seriously injured, and only has minor scrapes, it can usually heal on its own. The owner just needs to disinfect the affected area daily with alcohol. However, it is still necessary to take the dog to a pet hospital for a full check-up afterwards to ensure there are no other issues.
If the collision is more severe, such as large wounds, fractures, or internal organ damage, it usually won't heal on its own and the owner should timely take the dog to a pet hospital for related treatment.
2. Take some protective measures
No matter how severe the dog's injuries are, the owner should timely take the dog to a safe, comfortable, and well-ventilated environment, avoiding stress reactions, fainting, or shock due to heightened tension. When removing the dog from the scene, be sure to watch for incoming vehicles and avoid touching the dog's wounds. During the process of taking the dog to the hospital, ensure the dog's stability, do not violently shake the dog's body, and maintain good ventilation.
- Seek medical attention promptly
If a dog is hit by a car, timely take the dog to a pet hospital for inspection and treatment to avoid potential hidden dangers that cannot be detected by appearance alone. Because external impacts can cause fractures, internal organ bleeding, and ruptures in dogs, such as kidney trauma and acute pancreatitis. Severe cases may present with acute anemia, shock, and sepsis due to severe infection.
Note: We should civilly raise dogs. When taking dogs out, be sure to wear a leash and obey traffic rules to reduce the chances of injuries and protect the dog's safety.
