What to do if a puppy chokes on water

When a puppy chokes on water, the owner should first gently pat the dog's chest or back and take the dog to a well-ventilated area to rest. Then, closely observe the dog's condition. If the dog recovers within a short period of time, there is no need to worry. However, if the dog's condition is severe, with symptoms such as violent coughing, sneezing, difficulty breathing, and lethargy, it is necessary to take the dog to the pet hospital for treatment promptly.

  1. Emergency Treatment

When discovering that a puppy has choked on water, the owner can gently pat the dog's chest or back and take the dog to a well-ventilated area to rest. During this time, if the dog's mouth and nose have liquid flowing out, it is necessary to clean it up with gauze or tissue. Otherwise, it may develop into pneumonia later. It is also important not to shake the dog's body, as this can easily cause reflux and lead to suffocation. Generally, after emergency treatment, the dog's choking symptoms will be relieved.

  1. Seek Medical Attention in Time

If the puppy continues to cough after emergency treatment or the choking is severe, with symptoms such as difficulty breathing and lethargy, it is recommended to take the dog to the pet hospital for treatment as soon as possible to avoid delaying the illness.

  1. Precautions

Usually, when a dog is young, its body's various functions are still adapting, so it is easy to choke on water when drinking. Therefore, it is recommended to use a shallow water bowl for the puppy, making it convenient for it to drink water anytime. At the same time, always prepare clean water for the dog so that it can drink whenever it wants, avoiding choking due to drinking too quickly or being thirsty for a long time.
