Dog chokes and keeps making clicking sounds, what should I do?

There are many reasons why a dog might make clicking sounds, mainly due to eating too fast and eagerly, ingesting foreign objects, exercise, or respiratory diseases. If your dog is willing to eat after choking, you can feed it some easily digestible food and use a slow feeder to slow down its eating speed. If the dog shows symptoms such as loss of appetite, rapid breathing, and depression, it's necessary to take it to the pet hospital for X-ray examination and treat it according to the cause.

A dog that chokes and keeps making clicking sounds may be due to eating too fast and eagerly. You can adopt a feeding principle of less food and more meals in your daily care to prevent the dog from choking on too much food at once. Or prepare a slow feeder for your dog to slow down its eating speed.

The dog might also be choking due to accidentally swallowing foreign objects, which can cause coughing as the objects irritate the trachea. If your dog eats bones or large foreign objects, it may show symptoms such as dry heaving and rapid breathing. It's recommended to take the dog to the pet hospital for an X-ray to check for the location of the foreign object and remove it properly.

If your dog starts choking after exercise, it could be due to poor cardiopulmonary function, making it difficult for the dog to quickly exhale carbon dioxide produced in the body. In this case, let the dog rest quietly for a moment to recover. It's not recommended to let dogs with heart problems engage in intense exercise, as it could lead to heart disease and harm the dog's health.

Lastly, the clicking sound may be caused by respiratory diseases, such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Besides making coughing sounds, the dog may also show symptoms like fever, difficulty breathing, and wheezing during auscultation. X-ray examination can reveal heavy lung markings and pneumonia shadows.
