What to do if a puppy has a cold

The main symptoms of a puppy's cold are lethargy, loss of appetite, sneezing, and secretions from the nose. Some puppies with weak resistance may also have a raised temperature. Usually, the main cause of a puppy's cold is due to inadequate warming measures, resulting in the puppy getting cold. However, the symptoms of distemper and parvovirus are similar to those of a cold, so it is necessary to distinguish between them before treating.

When a puppy has a cold, the owner needs to take the following measures:

1. Infectious disease screening and treatment

Since distemper, parvovirus, and other infectious diseases have similar symptoms to colds, it is recommended to go to a pet hospital for common infectious disease screening when a puppy shows cold symptoms. Otherwise, the delay in diagnosis and treatment may lead to the puppy's death. After excluding infectious diseases, symptomatic treatment can be carried out according to the puppy's symptoms. It is recommended to feed some veterinary cold remedies. Since the puppy's immunity is lowered at this time, it is advised to take oral antibiotics to prevent secondary infections. If the puppy has a cough, it is necessary to feed cough medicine. If the puppy has a fever, physical methods can be used for cooling at the beginning. If the temperature cannot be reduced, veterinary fever-reducing drugs are needed.

2. Special attention to breeding management when a puppy has a cold

First of all, it is necessary to pay attention to warmth during the treatment of a puppy's cold. You can add more cotton wool or a stove to the place where the puppy sleeps, especially for puppies less than one month old. Otherwise, the puppy's condition may worsen. Secondly, provide the puppy with high-energy, easy-to-digest, and light food to provide nutrients for the body and reduce the burden on the stomach and intestines. Also, take the puppy for appropriate exercise to strengthen its resistance and help the body recover quickly.
