What to do when a puppy has a runny nose?

A runny nose in a puppy can be caused by various reasons such as irritating smells, catching a cold, bronchitis, or infection with the canine distemper virus. If the puppy only has a runny nose without any other symptoms, it is likely caused by irritating smells and is a normal phenomenon. If the puppy also has symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and lethargy, it is advised to immediately take the puppy to a pet hospital to avoid delay in treatment and worsening of symptoms.

  1. Irritating smells

If a puppy inhales irritating smells, such as paint or gasoline, the smell may stimulate the nasal mucosa, causing an increase in secretions and symptoms like a runny nose and sneezing. This is a normal physiological phenomenon and generally does not affect the puppy's health. Owners should not be overly concerned. Changing the puppy's environment to one without irritating smells can effectively alleviate symptoms.

  1. catching a cold

Puppies have weaker resistance than adults. If a puppy is washed and its fur is not dried promptly, it may catch a cold, resulting in a runny nose and fever. In this case, it is necessary to consult a veterinarian and have the puppy injected with antipyretic drugs or given intravenous antibiotics, which can help alleviate symptoms.

  1. Bronchitis

This condition is caused by large temperature differences between day and night and sudden drops in temperature. If a puppy is not well-protected from the cold, its resistance may decrease, allowing viruses to invade and multiply, causing symptoms like panting, chest tightness, and coughing. Owners should take their puppies to the hospital for inspection and treat them according to the examination results.

  1. Canine distemper virus infection

This virus is a highly contagious disease. It is most likely caused by contact with other infected puppies. After infection, symptoms such as high fever, runny nose, and loss of appetite may occur. The puppy will need veterinarian assistance to receive vaccines, which can help alleviate symptoms.
