What to do if a small dog falls and limps

small dog falls and limps, firstly, carefully check if there are any external injuries to the dog's leg. If there are injuries, immediately stop the bleeding and disinfect the wound. Secondly, if there are no external injuries, it is very likely that the leg is fractured or cracked, which cannot be healed spontaneously and requires timely DR examination at a pet hospital. The treatment usually involves internal or external fixation surgery, and the recovery time usually ranges from 3 to 4 months.

  1. Check for external injuries to the leg

When a small dog falls and limps, the owner needs to first check if there are any external injuries to the dog's leg. If the injury is caused by external factors, it is necessary to clean the wound with physiological saline, disinfect it with iodine, and apply anti-inflammatory medication. If the injury is not severe, it will heal spontaneously after a period of time.

  1. Go to the pet hospital for DR examination

If no external injuries are found after examination, the owner needs to take the dog to the pet hospital for X-ray examination to see if there are any fractures, cracks, or soft tissue injuries. Then, according to the examination results, take appropriate treatment measures. If it is a middle segment fracture of the front leg, external fixation or internal fixation can be performed. If it is a fracture of the hind leg, it is recommended to undergo internal fixation treatment. If not treated, the muscles of the injured leg will atrophy, and the dog will no longer be able to walk on the ground.

  1. Supplement calcium

If the owner usually only feeds the small dog a single type of dog food, the dog's uneven nutrition may lead to calcium deficiency, resulting in the dog limping after a fall. Therefore, the owner should also pay attention to supplementing calcium for the dog. It is better to choose liquid calcium, which has a higher absorption rate and causes less irritation to the dog's stomach. In addition, you can also feed some pet foods with high calcium content, such as beef, shrimp skin, and egg yolk, and take the dog out for more sun exposure to help with calcium absorption.

Note: If a dog falls, blindly picking up the dog may cause secondary injury, so it is necessary to consult a pet doctor in time, adopt proper restraint measures, and take the dog to the pet hospital for treatment.
