What should I do if my puppy is experiencing hematuria? Which medications should I use?

Hematuria in puppies may be a normal phenomenon, or it may be caused by various conditions such as urinary tract infection, cystitis, bladder stones, or kidney stones. When a puppy exhibits hematuria, owners should pay attention and observe the puppy's physical condition regularly. If the hematuria symptoms gradually improve, no special treatment is needed. However, if the symptoms worsen, it is recommended to take the puppy to a reputable pet hospital for timely treatment.

  1. Normal phenomenon

If the owner often feeds the puppy foods containing red pigments, such as dragon fruit or pig blood, the red pigments in these foods are not absorbed by the body and are excreted through urine, causing the urine to turn red. This is a normal phenomenon and does not require special treatment.

  1. Urinary Tract Infection

This is an inflammation mainly occurring in the urinary tract, with typical symptoms such as increased frequency of urination, dysuria, and urethral itching. When the inflammation of the urethral mucosa increases, it can cause local skin rupture, leading to hematuria. Treatment usually involves taking macrolide and tetracycline antibiotics according to the doctor's advice.

  1. Cystitis

This is an inflammation of the bladder, usually caused by bacterial infection. Symptoms include burning sensation during urination, urgency, and frequency of urination. Severe cases may cause mucosal rupture in the bladder, causing the blood to turn red. Treatment usually involves taking pet-specific antibiotics under the guidance of a doctor.

  1. Bladder Stones

This refers to hard crystalline deposits of minerals in the urine, which cause abdominal pain and difficulty urinating. When small stones pass through the urethra, they can scratch the surrounding skin and cause hematuria. Treatment usually involves taking medications to promote urination under a doctor's guidance.

  1. Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are formed when certain components in urine deposit in the kidneys, causing symptoms such as lower back pain and hematuria. If not improved promptly, the condition may worsen over time. Treatment usually involves surgical intervention under a doctor's supervision.

During the recovery period, encourage your puppy to drink more warm water to accelerate body metabolism, promote urination, and aid in recovery.
