When does a male Labrador become sexually mature?
Usually, dogs reach sexual maturity at around 8-9 months old, which is later than cats. By about 6 months, most of the dog's organs are mature, with the exception of the kidneys, which are the last to mature around 9 months. If not for breeding purposes, it is recommended to neuter the dog early. Statistically, castrated male dogs can expect to live 1-3 years longer.
When can a male Labrador be bred?
Usually, after a dog reaches sexual maturity, it can be bred. The sexual maturity of male dogs is usually between 7 and 9 months old, when they will show a strong interest in female dogs during outdoor activities, chasing and sniffing them to express their breeding intentions. Therefore, it is recommended to always wear a leash when taking the dog for a walk at this stage to avoid losing the dog.
What are the disadvantages of breeding a male Labrador?
Improper breeding methods can easily cause penile injuries. Male dogs have a penile bone, and if the female dog does not cooperate, the penis can easily break, requiring surgery in severe cases. Over-breeding can cause the penis to not retract properly, making it vulnerable to infection due to exposure to air, eventually leading to necrosis and requiring removal.
