When is the best time to spay a female cat?

The best time to spay a female cat is when she is 6-7 months old and has not reached her first heat. At this stage, there will be no production of sex hormones, avoiding hormonal disorders and reducing the chance of uterine diseases caused by heat. Additionally, vaccination and deworming are required before the spaying procedure, as the cat's resistance will decrease after the surgery, increasing the likelihood of infection.

When to spay a female cat

A female cat can undergo a spaying surgery at the age of 6 months. Early spaying can prevent many later-stage diseases, such as uterine pyometra, endometritis, and ovarian cysts. It is generally recommended that cats not intended for breeding can undergo the procedure. The surgery should be avoided during estrus and pregnancy periods to reduce the risk of surgery and blood loss. Since general anesthesia is required, the cat should be fasting and deprived of water the day before the operation.

Symptoms of uterine pyometra in female cats

Uterine pyometra in female cats is accompanied by mental depression, loss of appetite, and other adverse reactions. There are two common types of uterine pyometra: open and closed. In open uterine pyometra, discharge will be present at the vulva, and severe cases may present with purulent液体. In closed uterine pyometra, there will be no discharge from the vulva, but the cat will show signs of depression and loss of appetite. The uterus will only continue to accumulate pus, and if the surgery is not done early, there is a great risk of rupture, which can be life-threatening.

What to do if a cat has uterine pyometra

The best treatment for uterine pyometra in cats is surgical intervention. The cat's uterus is structurally different from humans, being a closed uterus. Therefore, once pus accumulates, it is difficult to expel, leading to sepsis. There are also cases of open uterine pyometra, but uterine pyometra cannot be cured with medication alone. Due to the barrier, medication cannot reach the uterus, making surgery the only option for removal. If diagnosed with uterine pyometra, it is recommended to undergo surgery immediately to avoid organ damage.
