Why are the ears of a 2-month-old kitten dirty?

The dirty ears of a two-month-old kitten may be due to the following reasons:

  1. Insufficient ear cleaning: If the owner does not regularly clean the kitten's ears, bacteria, fungi, or parasites may infect the ears. To clean the kitten's ear canals, use ear cleaning fluid, and gently wipe the dirt inside the kitten's ears with a cotton swab. If the dirt is caused by an infection, combine appropriate medications for ear washing treatment. If the infection is severe, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.

Why are cat ears dirty?

  1. Bacterial infection: Bacteria tend to grow in damp environments, such as when the cat's ears are always wet due to a damp environment or when the owner bathes the cat but does not dry its ears in time. This can lead to a foul-smelling, yellow, and purulent discharge. Treatment involves using antibacterial medications and ear washing. Severe infections require immediate medical attention.

  2. Fungal infection: When a cat's ears are infected with fungi, the cat may exhibit frequent itching, poor appetite, lethargy, and black earwax buildup. Use antifungal medications for ear drops and cleaning. Severe infections require prompt veterinary care.

  3. Parasite infection: When a kitten is in close contact with a cat suffering from ear mites or if there are parasites in the environment, the kitten's ears are prone to infection. Symptoms include a large amount of dry, dark brown debris, itching, and redness of the ear canal. Cleaning the ears with ear cleaning fluid and using treatments for ear mites can help.

How to care for a cat's ears?

  1. Regular ear cleaning: If the owner does not regularly clean the kitten's ears, ear secretions will accumulate and form earwax. If the living environment has a lot of dust, the buildup will occur more quickly. To clean the ears, put 1-2 drops of ear cleaning fluid into the ear canal, cover the kitten's ears, hold the ear base gently, and massage a few times. Release the kitten's ears, allowing it to shake out the cleaning fluid. Use a cotton swab to clean the dirt from the ear canal.
