Why do cats stick out their tongues while sleeping?

Cat sleeping with tongue out may be due to entering a deep sleep state, hence unconsciously sticking out their tongues. Secondly, it could be because the sleeping environment is too hot, so the cat sticks out its tongue to cool off. Additionally, if the cat has a cold or difficulty breathing through its nose, it might also exhibit the phenomenon of sticking out its tongue while sleeping. If the cat has no other abnormalities, owners don't need to worry too much. However, if there are other accompanying abnormal behaviors, it's necessary to take the cat to the pet hospital for inspection and treatment.

  1. Entering deep sleep

Cats generally sleep a lot during the day, but they only enter deep sleep for a few hours. When a cat enters deep sleep, it may exhibit phenomena such as rolling eyes, drooling, and sticking out its tongue. This also indicates that the cat has a high level of trust in its surroundings, which is a normal phenomenon, and owners don't need to worry.

  1. Cooling off

Due to their poor heat dissipation ability, when the summer temperature is high or the cat sleeps in an overly hot environment for a long time, they may use sticking out their tongues as a way to cool off. This is a normal physiological phenomenon. Owners are advised to place the cat's bedding and blankets in a relatively cool and well-ventilated area. Try not to let the cat sleep in direct sunlight to avoid heatstroke.

  1. Difficulty breathing

If the cat exhibits other symptoms besides sticking out its tongue while sleeping, such as fever, coughing, and runny nose, etc., it could be due to a cold or difficulty breathing through the nose. In this case, it's necessary to take the cat to the pet hospital promptly to determine the specific cause and treat accordingly.
