Why do Corgis have their tails chopped off?

The original reason for chopping off a Corgi's tail was due to work requirements. It was done to prevent the Corgi from getting its tail stepped on by cows during the process of herding them. Nowadays, however, most Corgis have their tails chopped off for aesthetic reasons, but it also serves to reduce risks and bacterial infections. It is generally recommended to chop off a Corgi's tail shortly after birth, when the Corgi's pain sensation is not well developed. This can be done by wrapping the tail area with cotton thread, which causes the tail to die and fall off due to lack of blood circulation. However, this method may lead to infection, so it is generally recommended to perform the tail chop via surgery.

  1. Work requirements

Before becoming pet dogs, Corgis were used for herding cattle. When a cow becomes unruly, they bite the cow's ankle, causing the cow to feel pain and step randomly. To prevent the Corgi's tail from being stepped on, Corgis used for herding cattle needed to have their tails chopped off. Over time, Corgis became pet dogs, but this tradition remained unchanged.

  1. For aesthetics

From an aesthetic standpoint, Corgi tail chops are due to human preference. Because Corgis have a long body and short limbs, their buttocks become large when they grow up. A long tail would affect the dog's aesthetics, while a short tail makes them appear cute. The heart-shaped buttocks also make tail-chopped Corgis popular among many people.

  1. Reduce risks

Due to their short stature, Corgis are particularly vulnerable to exposure of their identity and weakness when encountering dangers. Therefore, tail chops benefit Corgis by allowing them to hide and confuse enemies.

  1. Reduce bacterial infections

Corgis love to sit on the ground, especially after defecating. Their small tails are particularly prone to picking up feces and breeding bacteria, significantly increasing the likelihood of the Corgi contracting diseases. Therefore, chopping off the Corgi's tail can also prevent bacterial proliferation and reduce the occurrence of diseases.

Note: Corgis can choose to have their tails chopped off or not, which mainly depends on the owner's preference. There are even some Corgis born with short tails, making it unnecessary for them to undergo a tail chop procedure.
