Why do Teddy Bears get their tails chopped off?
Teddy Bears get their tails chopped off mainly for aesthetic reasons. People believe that teddy bears with chopped tails are more agile and adorable. However, there are also certain benefits to having a chopped tail.
- To avoid tail injuries
Teddy Bear dogs have thin tail bones, which can easily be injured during normal play or excited movements. Additionally, in fights, if the tail is too long, it can be easily bitten by other dogs. Therefore, chopping off the tail can prevent tail injuries and avoid broken tails.
- To prevent bacterial proliferation
There are many dirt and bacteria on the ground. If the teddy bear's tail is too long, it is more likely to get dirty and bacterial infections, leading to a rotting tail. Therefore, chopping off the tail can also maintain hygiene and prevent bacterial infections.
- To hide emotions
Dogs express their emotions through their tails. For teddy bears with strong possessiveness and territory awareness, if they don't get their tails chopped off, their aggressive and provocative personalities can easily lead to trouble. If their fearful emotions are detected by other dogs through their tails, they are more likely to suffer and encounter problems. Therefore, having a chopped tail helps dogs hide their emotions, making it more difficult for enemies to detect, which may also be the reason for chopping off dog tails in history.
However, it is best to chop off a dog's tail within three days after birth, as the wound is more likely to heal easily. It is not recommended to chop off the tail of an adult dog.
