Why do dogs get tartar?

Dogs may develop tartar due to various reasons such as主人 not paying attention to oral hygiene, frequently feeding dogs soft food, and long-term exposure to human food. Dogs that eat soft food regularly or do not undergo regular dental cleaning are more susceptible to tartar formation. When owners discover tartar on their dog's teeth, it is essential to bring them to a veterinary hospital for ultrasonic teeth cleaning to prevent severe oral odor.

  1. Lack of oral hygiene

If oral hygiene is not maintained, such as not brushing teeth or using mouthwash, the number of bacteria in a dog's mouth increases. These bacteria combine with food debris to form dental plaque, which hardens into tartar over time if not cleaned. To prevent dog tartar, owners should clean their dog's mouths promptly and provide them with chew toys.

  1. Frequently feeding dogs soft food

If dogs are often given soft foods such as meat, rice, and canned food, and their teeth are not cleaned or brushed, food debris can get trapped between teeth, leading to tartar formation. If not addressed, tartar can worsen over time. It is recommended to feed dogs mainly dog food and avoid feeding them soft food long-term.

  1. Long-term feeding of human food

Human food contains substantial amounts of sugar, which can promote the growth of dental plaque if fed to dogs regularly. This leads to tartar formation over time. It is not advisable to feed dogs human food for an extended period. Moreover, human food often contains excessive amounts of oil and salt, which can cause digestive issues in dogs, such as vomiting and diarrhea, if fed consistently.
