What's going on when a small dog scratches the wall?
A small dog scratching the wall may be doing so to grind its nails or because it is bored at home and wants to kill time. In addition, if the dog is found to be gnawing on corners or eating wall dust other than scratching the wall, it may be due to a phenomenon called pica caused by a lack of certain trace elements in the body. In this case, the owner can go to the pet hospital to buy some trace element tablets for the dog to see if there is any improvement.
- Grinding nails
When a dog's nails are too long, they can cause discomfort, so the dog will scratch the wall or floor to grind its claws. Therefore, when the owner discovers that the dog is scratching the wall, they can first check the dog's nails to see if they are too long. If so, they should be trimmed promptly.
- Boredom
If a dog is always left alone at home with no toys to play with, it may resort to random scratching and gnawing out of boredom, especially for energetic breeds like the Siberian Husky, which can turn the house into a mess. It is recommended that the owner buy more toys to consume the dog's energy and take the dog for walks when they have time.
- Pica
If the dog not only scratches the wall but also gnaws on corners and eats wall dust, it may be suffering from pica caused by a lack of trace elements such as calcium, iron, copper, and sodium in the body. In this case, the owner should promptly stop the dog from eating random objects, as it can lead to gastrointestinal discomfort. The dog should be supplemented with trace elements and other nutrients as needed.
