Why won't my dog drink water?

Dog refusal to drink water may be due to a lack of thirst or a dislike for water, especially for some dogs who are resistant to thirst. Unless they feel particularly thirsty, they won't drink water actively. Secondly, because dogs have a keen sense of smell, they may refuse to drink water when the water quality is poor or had an unpleasant smell. Furthermore, if the dog also shows signs of depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea, it indicates that the dog is sick and unwilling to drink water due to discomfort. It is recommended to take the dog to a pet hospital promptly to check and determine the specific cause, then use appropriate medication.

  1. Dog not thirsty or dislike water

Some dogs just don't like to drink water, unless they are extremely thirsty, they won't drink water. In addition, if the dog's regular food has a high water content, the dog may not drink water because it is not thirsty.

If you want your dog to drink water, you can give them the water leftover from cooking chicken breast, without adding salt, or mix a suitable amount of pet-specific goat milk powder to make it easier for the dog to drink. This will help avoid dehydration caused by insufficient water intake, constipation, and other issues.

  1. Poor water quality or unpleasant smell

Dogs have a highly sensitive sense of smell. If the owner doesn't change the water regularly, the dog will refuse to drink it due to the poor quality or unpleasant smell. Therefore, it is essential to provide the dog with clean and hygienic drinking water daily and remember to change it regularly.

  1. The dog is sick

If your dog hasn't been drinking water for a long time and shows signs of lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea, it is likely sick. Firstly, for young dogs or newly adopted dogs, it is necessary to consider diseases such as parvovirus, canine coronavirus infection, and distemper. Secondly, if the dog has been vaccinated, it may be due to more severe acute gastroenteritis, acute pancreatitis, or other diseases. Additionally, older dogs may experience kidney or liver disease.

Therefore, when discovering these abnormal symptoms in a dog, the owner should take the dog to a pet hospital immediately for inspection and treat the dog after determining the specific cause.

Note: If a dog has no water to drink, its metabolism cannot be completed, and its organs will soon fail and die. Therefore, owners need to provide their dogs with ample water every day. When going out, you can also prepare an outdoor water bottle for your dog. It is especially important to ensure that dogs have enough water intake in summer.
