What to Note When Administering Rabies Vaccine to Dogs

The main points to note when administering a rabies vaccine to a dog include pre-vaccination precautions and post-vaccination precautions. First, when preparing your dog for the rabies vaccine, pay attention to its age and health status. Generally, dogs aged 3 months or older and in good health can receive the rabies vaccine.

Second, after administering the rabies vaccine, observe your dog at a pet hospital for about 20 minutes. If there are no abnormalities, you can leave the hospital. Also, do not bathe your dog for one week before and after the vaccination.

Pre-vaccination Precautions

  1. A dog's body can withstand the rabies vaccine from the age of three months. If the dog is two months old and in good health, it can begin to receive vaccines for infectious diseases, with three doses in total, each dose intervals for 21 days. One week after the third dose, administer the rabies vaccine. Adult dogs need to receive one dose of the infectious disease vaccine and one dose of the rabies vaccine annually, with each dose interval for one week.

  2. Ensure that your dog is in perfect health before administering the rabies vaccine. If the dog has symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite, depression, runny nose, sneezing, and fever, it cannot receive the vaccine. You must wait for the dog to recover before injecting the rabies vaccine.

  3. Dogs should not take a bath for 5-7 days before vaccination, and attention should be paid to warmth to avoid diseases caused by decreased resistance. If you have already bathed your dog, you should observe it for seven days before vaccination.

Post-vaccination Precautions

  1. Some dogs may have allergic reactions to the rabies vaccine. Therefore, after administering the rabies vaccine to your dog, the owner should observe the dog for 20 minutes before leaving the hospital.

  2. After receiving the vaccine, a dog's resistance will decrease. Therefore, do not bathe your dog for 7 days before and after the rabies vaccine, or it may lead to a decrease in resistance and affect the immune effect.

  3. Do not take your dog outdoors for play until the vaccine is fully administered, especially avoiding contact with other animals with abnormal behavior. This is because the antibody level in the body is not high enough to resist external virus invasion.
