Can a cat's urinary tract stones be naturally discharged?

Cats with urinary tract stones may experience difficulty and pain during urination. If the cat has a large number of stones or the diameter of the stones is relatively large, surgery is generally required. If the stones are small and few in number, owners can promote stone removal by providing plenty of water and administering oral lithotripsy drugs.

Treatment of Urinary Tract Stones

Owners can take the following measures:

  1. Encourage your cat to exercise more. After exercise, check the cat litter box to see if there is cat urine and whether the urine volume is normal.
  2. Ensure your cat drinks plenty of water. You can add a little honey to the water to make it more appealing to your cat. The more your cat drinks, the more it will urinate.
  3. If you notice that your cat drinks water and exercises normally but urinates less frequently or has a small urine output, consider taking it to the vet for a checkup and treatment.

Causes of Urinary Stones

Urological lesions are a significant condition for the formation of urinary stones. Inflammation of the urinary tract can cause tissue necrosis, and the accumulation of inflammatory exudates and bacteria can form the core of the stone. Mineral salts and colloidal substances surround the core, forming the stone. Many bacteria can also cause phosphocalcium and carbonate precipitates, which facilitate the formation of urinary tract stones. The treatment principle is to discharge the stones and treatsymptomatically. If the urethra is blocked, surgery is recommended to remove the stone.

Diagnostic Methods for Urinary Stones

Cats' urinary stones can usually be checked through three methods:

  1. Check for crystals in urine through routine urinalysis.
  2. Check for strong echoes in the bladder or kidneys through ultrasound to detect stones.
  3. Detect stones in the kidneys or bladder through X-ray examination or urinary tract contrast radiography. These three tests can help identify stones.
