Can a queen cat naturally expel the placenta?
Normally, the placenta will be expelled automatically during a queen cat's normal childbirth. However, there are also cases where the placenta remains retained and is not expelled normally. After the queen cat expels the placenta, she usually eats it herself. If the owner does not discover the placenta and suspects that it is retained inside the queen cat's body without normal expulsion, it is best to take her to the hospital for inspection, as placenta retention can cause internal infections in the queen cat's uterus.
Usually, queens can give birth naturally. If the owner is worried about the queen, they can make some prepartions to help her have a smooth delivery.
Firstly, the owner needs to prepare sterile gauze, scissors, disinfectant solution, warm boiled water, and razors, which can be used during the birth.
Secondly, prepare a dedicated delivery room. The room should be smooth inside to prevent injuries to the queen and the newly born kittens. There should be no other smells inside the room to avoid stimulating the queen and the kittens, as other smells can make the queen feel unsafe. The room should be kept warm and dry, with good ventilation. The placement of the room should be in a familiar area for the cat, not too bright, and keep it quiet.
Thirdly, after the kittens are born, they are wrapped in the amniotic membrane. The owner needs to check if the membrane has torn and if the queen has bitten off the umbilical cord. If not, the owner needs to cut it off to prevent the kitten from choking on amniotic fluid. Note that try not to let the kittens be exposed to too much human smell, as the queen might reject them because of it.
Lastly, the queen needs to replenish nutrients promptly to maintain her physical condition and recover faster, as well as provide enough milk. An important point to note is that calcium supplementation is crucial, as calcium will be lost faster through milk during nursing.
