Can dog owners touch puppies right after they are born?
The answer to this question depends on the situation. If the birth goes smoothly and no assistance is needed, it is recommended that the dog owner does not touch the puppies. This is especially true for dogs who are experiencing their first pregnancy, as they may have an overprotective maternal instinct that prevents them from allowing anyone to touch their babies, even their owners. They may view any sudden stranger as a potential threat to their puppies and become frightened or even aggressive.
If the birth is not going well or there are complications after the birth, it is necessary for the owner to assist in the delivery and take the dog to the hospital for treatment. In this case, it is acceptable to touch the puppies.
Why do dogs become aggressive or even bite when their owners touch them or the puppies right after birth? There are a few reasons:
Lack of trust in the owner: If the owner and dog have not established a complete trust relationship, the dog may not consider the owner to be its master, but rather a partner or subordinate. This can lead to the dog not allowing the owner to touch its things or the puppies.
Nervousness about the puppies: If your dog is a first-time mother, she will likely be particularly nervous and protective of her first-born puppies.
Fear of the puppies being taken away: If the dog has witnessed her puppies being taken away by the owner, she will become suspicious and cautious around the owner, not allowing them to touch the puppies.
Overly strong maternal instinct: Dogs naturally refuse to let anyone near their babies for fear that they may harm them.
To avoid these situations, it is recommended that dog owners first establish a trust relationship with their dogs. If the owner must touch the puppies, it is best to wear gloves to prevent the dog from detecting any foreign smells on their skin. After the birth, pay more attention to the dog's diet and monitor their behavior and stool issues. If any abnormalities occur, consult a veterinarian promptly.
