Canine Distemper and Leg Seizures Before Sleep
Canine distemper seizures before sleep indicate that the dog has developed neurological symptoms. However, as long as the owner does not give up treatment, there is still hope for the dog to survive. Therefore, it is recommended that the owner immediately take the dog to the hospital for treatment, aiming to control the dog's neurological symptoms, combat the virus, and enhance the dog's immunity through antiviral drugs, neurological drugs, and vitamins.
How Long Does Distemper Seizures Take to Appear?
Distemper seizures generally appear about 10 days after the onset of the disease, but not all cases of distemper will present with seizures. This depends on the severity of the illness. Dogs with neurological symptoms who survive may still have permanent complications, such as epileptic seizures, vestibular disease, quadriplegia, myoclonus, etc.
How Long Do Distemper Seizures Last?
Distemper seizures in the late stage can last for a long time and even continue until death. Canine distemper virus is a highly contagious disease with a high mortality rate. It causes symptoms such as vomiting, anorexia, sneezing, thick mucus discharge, and depression in dogs. In the early to middle stages, dogs generally show these symptoms. In the late stage, the virus invades the brain nerves, causing seizures that persist. Even after recovery, dogs may occasionally experience seizure symptoms.
Treatment for Distemper Seizures
For dogs with distemper seizures in the late stage, some barbiturate drugs can be used to sedate them. However, the appearance of neurological symptoms in dogs with canine distemper virus is irreversible, so drugs can only suppress symptoms, and there is currently no cure. As seizures consume the dog's energy, it is essential to provide the dog with good nutrition to replenish its strength.
