What are the symptoms of abortion in cats?

After a cat experiences an abortion, physically, the cat's abdomen will stop growing or suddenly shrink, becoming anxious and restless, constantly wandering around the house. The cat's mental state and appetite will also deteriorate, and it will have a painful reaction when touched on the abdomen. The vagina will continuously secrete reddish-brown fluids for a long time. In terms of the delivery process, the cat may accompany severe contractions and expel stillborn or mummified fetuses. If a cat shows signs of abortion, it's best to send it to the hospital for professional treatment.

  1. First, a cat's normal pregnancy duration is about 63-65 days. If the cat shows abnormalities during this period, or if it doesn't give birth after exceeding the duration, the possibility of abortion should be considered.

  2. When a cat experiences an abortion, it generally exhibits the following symptoms: painful reaction when touched on the abdomen, restlessly wandering around the house, showing poor mental state and loss of appetite; vaginal discharge of reddish-brown fluids, lasting for 5-7 days; accompanying severe contractions and expelling underdeveloped fetuses; sudden shrinkage of the abdomen, delivering stillborn or mummified fetuses.

  3. If a cat shows these symptoms during pregnancy, the owner should take the cat to the hospital in time, and use abdominal DR or ultrasound to check if the cat has experienced an abortion. If there is no abortion or only a mild abortion, progesterone injection is generally required. However, if the cat has already aborted, the doctor should perform surgery to remove the dead fetus as soon as possible, and inject medications to promote uterine contractions and accelerate the excretion of uterine waste.
