What should I do if my cat's eyes can't open?
Cat eyes that can't open may be due to causes such as heat, foreign object stimulation, and eye inflammation. When a cat has this problem, the owner can first gently check the cat's eyes. If there is a foreign object in the eye, it is necessary to remove it promptly. However, if there is no foreign object and the cat accompanied by symptoms such as tearfulness, red and swollen eyes, excessive eye secretions, loss of appetite, increased body temperature, and other abnormal symptoms, it is necessary to go to the pet hospital for examination and treatment in a timely manner to avoid delaying the disease.
- Heat
If the cat often eats dry and oily food and drinks little water, it is prone to heatstroke. After suffering from heatstroke, the cat's eyes will have a lot of mucus, which will cause the upper and lower eyelids to stick together if not cleaned promptly. In this case, the cat's eyes will not be able to open. To solve this problem, the owner needs to adjust the cat's diet structure, stop feeding high-fat and high-salt foods, do not feed human dishes, and choose low-salt and low-fat cat food as the mainstay. Additionally, you can add some vegetables and provide the cat with enough drinking water.
- Foreign object stimulation
If dust, hair, or insects enter the cat's eyes, the foreign objects will stimulate the eyes, causing the cat to be unable to open them. In this case, the owner should gently pry open the cat's eyes to check for foreign objects. If found, wash the eyes with physiological saline to allow the foreign objects to flow out naturally. Afterward, apply antibacterial and anti-inflammatory eye drops to prevent infection.
- Eye inflammation
When a cat suffers from conjunctivitis or keratitis caused by bacteria or viruses, it will have symptoms such as red and swollen eyes, inability to open the eyes, tearfulness, photophobia, and excessive eye secretions. If the infection is caused by a virus, it will also be accompanied by symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, coughing, and increased body temperature. If these symptoms are noticed, it is essential to go to the pet hospital promptly for examination and treatment according to the results.
