Dog has soft stools but is energetic
A dog with soft stools but energetic may be caused by improper diet, parasite infection, virus infection, gastroenteritis, and other reasons. It needs to be treated by adjusting the diet and taking oral medications. Through active and effective treatment, the disease can be controlled, and most dogs can achieve a cure. If the condition continues to worsen and the treatment is not particularly effective, it is recommended that the owner take the dog to the pet hospital in a timely manner.
What are the causes of a dog having soft stools but being energetic?
Improper diet
If a dog often eats spicy foods such as chili and garlic, it may cause intestinal discomfort, disrupt the gut microbiome, and affect food digestion, resulting in soft stools. This generally does not affect the dog's energy level.
- Parasite infection
Usually caused by an unhealthy diet, it leads to a large number of parasites in the intestine, which are excreted through feces, causing worm movement in the stool and presenting as soft stools.
- Virus infection
If the body is infected with a virus, it increases the risk of diseases such as canine parvovirus and distemper. As the virus continues to increase in the body, it may cause changes in the stool consistency, usually presenting as soft stools, but the dog remains energetic and has a good appetite.
- Gastroenteritis
If a dog has gastroenteritis, it will affect normal eating, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. It may also lead to diarrhea, but generally does not affect the dog's normal energy level.
II. What are the treatments for a dog with soft stools but energetic?
- General treatment
If the cause is improper diet, adjust the diet. Do not feed the dog spicy and stimulating foods, and instead feed it canned food and chicken breast, which generally will not cause abnormal stool consistency.
- Oral medication
If the dog has a parasite infection, follow the doctor's advice and give parasite-control medications; if it's a virus infection, follow the doctor's advice and give antiviral medications; if it's gastroenteritis, follow the doctor's advice and give medications to protect the gastric mucosa and promote digestion.
- Intravenous drip
If the condition is severe and oral medication is ineffective, follow the doctor's advice and give antibiotic and antiviral medications through intravenous drip, which is beneficial for disease control.
