Symptoms of Feline Mammary Hyperplasia
Feline mammary hyperplasia mainly manifests as breast enlargement, lumps, increased body temperature, and lethargy. Additionally, cats will frequently lick the mammary area due to pain, causing skin ulceration and exacerbating the condition. If the hyperplasia occurs in cats after giving birth, it often leads to difficulty in milk excretion, and may also cause poor mental state and increased body temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to take the cat to the pet hospital for DR or ultrasound examination in time, and then remove the hyperplastic nodules through surgery.
- Causes of Feline Mammary Hyperplasia
1.1. Mammary hyperplasia in cats may be caused by endocrine disorders. If a cat has a high reproductive rate or does not reproduce, long-term consumption of food containing hormones can lead to hormone imbalance in the body, thereby triggering uterine diseases and mammary hyperplasia.
1.2. During the estrus period, the cat's immunity and resistance are low, making it easy for bacteria to enter the uterus, causing infections such as endometritis and pyometra. These diseases may also lead to mammary hyperplasia.
- How to Treat Feline Mammary Hyperplasia
2.1. For feline mammary hyperplasia, it is recommended to undergo relevant examinations at the pet hospital. For unspayed cats, it is advised to perform a uterine and ovarian removal surgery. The surgery is usually performed via a lateral incision rather than a midline incision due to the large mammary glands. After a few weeks of ovarian removal, the mammary hyperplasia will recede.
2.2. If abnormal mammary tissue hyperplasia causes insufficient blood supply and necrosis, or if the mammary hyperplasia does not improve after removing the progesterone source, mastectomy should be performed.
Note: During treatment, it is necessary to fit the cat with an Elizabethan collar to prevent the cat from licking the mammary area and exacerbating the infection.同时,还需要给猫咪进行热敷处理。
