How often should a Pekingese dog squeeze their anal glands?

It is recommended to squeeze a Pekingese dog's anal glands once a month. The anal glands are fluids inside the dog's anus. If the anal glands are not squeezed, the fluid-filled sacs on both sides of the anus will accumulate secretions, which will eventually rot and irritate the inner wall of the anus, causing inflammation. If the area feels swollen, it is recommended to use compression to empty the anal glands. Each dog accumulates anal gland fluid at a different rate, and some dogs will empty them on their own without needing to be squeezed manually.

Causes of Anal Gland Diseases

Most anal gland diseases are initially caused by the inability of the fluid inside the anal glands to be discharged normally, resulting in redness and swelling of the dog's anal glands, and then causing a series of anal gland problems. Due to the accumulation of too much fluid in the anal glands, the glands may become blocked if not treated promptly, and the inflammation may become increasingly severe.

How to Squeeze Anal Glands

First, lift the dog's tail up to expose the anus, then use your thumb and index finger to slowly push the anal glands at the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions towards the center. It is best to cover the anus with a tissue or cotton to avoid splashing the smelly fluid on your clothes. Afterward, rinse the dog's bottom with warm water. Note: The technique must be from inside to outside, and from light to heavy, to avoid making the dog's anus red and swollen.

**What Is the Purpose of Squeezing Anal Glands?

Squeezing anal glands helps dogs clean their anal glands by manually compressing them. The secretions of the anal glands will be expelled along with the feces during the dog's bowel movement. However, if the dog has persistent diarrhea or soft stools for a long time, the cecum will not be stimulated by the pressure, causing the anal gland fluid to accumulate and causing discomfort to the dog. In this case, manual compression is necessary.
