Clogged anal gland in a Pomeranian at what age
Dog anal glands need to be cleaned regularly, and it can be done every three to four weeks. If they are not cleaned regularly, the secretions from the anal glands can accumulate in the anal sac and irritate the mucous membrane, causing inflammation. This can lead to difficulties in defecation or swelling of the anus. In severe cases, the anus may ulcerate and form a fistula, which requires surgical removal.
When to squeeze the anal gland in a Pomeranian
Usually, you can try to squeeze the anal gland once every three to four weeks based on the situation. If the stool is normally formed and doesn't have excessive anal gland fluid residue, there won't be a need for frequent squeezing. However, if there is swelling upon touch, you can use compression to empty the anal gland fluid. Generally, adult dogs have their anal glands squeezed during monthly baths. Regular and proper anal gland squeezing can also prevent your dog from having a bad body odor.
What is the purpose of squeezing the anal gland in a dog?
Squeezing the anal gland helps dogs clean themselves by manually compressing the anal gland. The secretions from the anal gland are usually expelled along with the feces during defecation. However, if a dog has continuous diarrhea or soft stools for a long time, the colon doesn't produce enough pressure to stimulate the anal gland during defecation, causing the anal gland fluid to accumulate and causing discomfort to the dog. This is when manual compression is necessary.
How to squeeze the anal gland in a dog
The dog's anal gland, also known as the anal sac, is located at four and eight o'clock positions relative to the anus. Under normal circumstances, a dog's anal gland needs to be cleaned every half month. The method is: place a piece of tissue paper around the anus, use your index finger and thumb to form a V-shape and touch the corresponding position, and gently squeeze the swollen anal sac to make the contents flow out. Generally, only one to two squeezes are needed per month, without excessive or frequent compression. After squeezing, you can wipe the anus with warm water.
