However, if the dog already has inflamed anal glands, timely medical treatment is necessary.
Usually, when a dog is 2-3 months old, its anal glands have already matured, and then they can be squeezed. After that, squeeze once every 3-4 weeks. As dogs usually secrete anal gland fluid during defecation, if they have soft stools or diarrhea for a long time, the fluid will accumulate in the anal glands. If the dog's anal glands are not regularly squeezed, it will not only cause a strong smell but also easily lead to infection.
Squeezing the anal glands is generally recommended during bath time. First, control the dog to prevent it from struggling due to discomfort during the process. Find the position of the anal glands, usually between 3 and 7 o'clock. Then wear clean gloves and gently squeeze these two areas. You can clearly feel one of the glands contracting, indicating that the position is correct. Be sure to control the force during the process to avoid hurting the dog's anus. After squeezing the anal glands, apply some antibiotic ointment to the dog.
If you find abnormal secretions, pus, or other symptoms around the dog's anus during the squeezing process, or the color of the squeezed anal gland fluid is very dark, or the dog has difficulties in defecation, swollen anus, itching, or frequently rubbing its body on the ground, etc., promptly clean the pus, rinse the anus with physiological saline, and feed the dog medications containing ingredients such as amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. If the condition is severe, the dog should be sent to the hospital for treatment.
