How to check for dog roundworms
Dogs with roundworms will pass stool mixed with blood and mucus, and sometimes they will vomit. Roundworm testing requires a microscope stool examination at a pet hospital. Roundworms can be treated with specialized roundworm drugs for about a week. Then go to the pet hospital for a microscope examination to see if there are still roundworm eggs.
How to get roundworms
When dogs play in the grass, they may come into contact with roundworm eggs. Once the infectious eggs enter the dog's digestive tract, they will breed; dogs can also be infected by contacting sick dogs or contaminated food or water. Therefore, to avoid dogs contracting roundworms, owners need to avoid taking dogs to play in grassy areas and regularly give dogs internal deworming.
Severe symptoms of roundworm infection
After a dog is infected with roundworms, the main symptoms are bloody stools, watery stools mixed with mucus and a small amount of blood, and the erosion of intestinal mucosal epithelial cells. The dog may show symptoms of anemia, such as loss of appetite, weight loss, and pale mucous membranes. Some dogs may vomit. Adult dogs have stronger resistance and may have milder symptoms, such as mild gastrointestinal symptoms. Puppies have weaker resistance and may refuse to eat or drink, causing severe symptoms such as hypoglycemia or shock due to dehydration.
How to deworm dogs with roundworms
The chance of dogs contracting roundworms is relatively low, and routine deworming usually does not include roundworms. Preventive treatment for roundworms is not necessary until symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and hemorrhagic enteritis appear. When a dog shows these symptoms, first check and confirm the diagnosis of roundworm infection before treatment. Usually, after a dog is infected with roundworms, it can be cured by continuously treating with drugs containing ingredients such as thiabendazole for 5 to 7 days.
