Symptoms of dogs with coccidia

When a dog is infected with coccidia, symptoms such as lethargy, bloody diarrhea, jelly-like intestinal mucosa, and dehydration may appear. It is necessary to go to the pet hospital for fecal examination to confirm the diagnosis. Some dogs with coccidia may not have clinical symptoms, but they can still excrete oval structures in their feces and infect other dogs or puppies. Therefore, dog feces should be cleaned promptly. The main route of infection of dog coccidia is through the ingestion of oocysts in food and water, which enter the dog's body through the mouth. It is important to pay attention to diet hygiene.

When a dog has coccidia, symptoms such as jelly-like mucous diarrhea and bloody stool at the end of the stool may appear. Dogs become infected with coccidia mainly due to poor sanitary conditions in their living environment. Dogs infect coccidia by ingesting oocysts from contaminated environments. Due to an underdeveloped immune system, puppies are more susceptible to coccidia infection when they come into contact with contaminated dog feces. Usually, it is necessary to isolate and raise dogs with coccidia in time to prevent transmission to other pets.

When suspecting that a dog has coccidia, it is usually recommended to collect the dog's feces for microscope examination. Finding oocysts in the feces can confirm the diagnosis, after which timely treatment with drugs containing sulfadimidine is necessary. In addition, if severe diarrhea caused by coccidia infection leads to dehydration, intravenous fluid replacement is needed to regulate the body fluid balance.

To prevent dogs from infecting coccidia, it is necessary to regularly disinfect and clean the dog's living environment, avoid excessive dirt and chaos, and maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the dog's diet. It is advised to wear a muzzle when taking dogs out to play, avoiding dogs from licking dirty water and food on the ground, and reducing the chances of coccidia infection. Regular deworming is also necessary for dog feeding, and a fecal examination can be done annually.
