How to clean a cat's ears

Before cleaning your cat's ears, you need to prepare ear cleaning solution, cotton buds, and tissues. First, gently lift your cat's ear with one hand, then drop 3-4 drops of ear cleaning solution into the ear. With the other hand, gently massage the base of the cat's ear for 5-10 seconds, allowing the cleaning solution to fully contact and dissolve the secretions in the ear. Next, let the cat shake off excess cleaning solution and secretions, and use a cotton bud to remove any visible dirt in the ear canal. Finally, use a tissue to wipe off the wet fur around the cat's ears to prevent the cat from catching a cold. It's best to have one person hold the cat still to avoid it from moving around.

  1. How often should cats have their ears cleaned?

The frequency of ear cleaning for cats usually depends on the amount of ear canal secretions. If the cat does not have an ear infection, it usually requires cleaning once or twice a week. If the cat has an ear mite infection, malassezia, or bacterial infection, it is recommended to clean the ears daily to avoid exacerbating the inner ear infection. Regular ear cleaning can also effectively prevent ear mites and ear inflammation.

  1. How deep can you clean a cat's ears?

A cat's ear canal is L-shaped, and it usually extends 2-3cm deep. Insert the cotton bud until it reaches the bottom of the cat's ear, which is enough. Going too deep can push the dirt inside the ear and easily injure the cat.

  1. What to do if your cat's ears bleed during cleaning?

If your cat bleeds during ear cleaning, it is recommended to perform an endoscopic examination of the ear canal to check the location of the bleeding point and whether there is a middle ear infection. If the bleeding is just minor skin oozing, the cat can usually recover on its own. However, if a middle ear infection is present, it is advised to conduct a drug sensitivity test and clean the ears regularly to prevent infection from spreading.

  1. Correct posture for cleaning a cat's ears:

  2. Before cleaning your cat's ears, drop 1-2 drops of ear cleaning solution on the cotton bud, and wipe the cat's ears in the order of ear flaps and then ear canal. If you extract earwax, place it on a piece of tissue and avoid throwing it away to prevent contamination.

  3. When cleaning your cat's ears, insert the cotton bud slowly into the ear and perform the cleaning procedure gently to prevent puncturing the cat's eardrum.

  4. Cats usually clean their own ears, but we should regularly clean and inspect them to prevent ear infections.

  5. However, be careful not to overclean your cat's ears. If you clean the ears too thoroughly, the cat's ears will lose their resistance to bacteria and dust, making them more prone to illness.
