How to Give Cats Medicine
When giving cats medicine, you can first try letting them take it voluntarily by mixing the drug into their usual food. Some cats will eat it directly, but some may still spit it out. In this case, you need to use a more forceful method, such as feeding the medicine directly with your hand or using a feeder. Be careful when using a feeder because some cats may swallow the soft plastic. Of course, if the medicine is in liquid form, you can also use a syringe without a needle to administer it through the cat's corner of the mouth. If necessary, bring the cat to the pet hospital for medication.
- Giving Medicine with Your Hand
If the cat is gentle, you can directly feed the medicine with your hand. First, wrap the cat securely with a towel. Then, use your right thumb and index finger to hold the tablet, and with your left hand, slightly raise the cat's head to about a 45-degree angle. Use your index and thumb to stimulate and open the cat's jaw, holding it so it can't close. Quickly drop the tablet into the cat's throat, then close the cat's mouth and hold it firmly. While doing this, gently rub the cat's throat with your right hand. Once you hear the cat swallow a few times, release the pressure to ensure the tablet has been swallowed.
- Using a Medicine Feeder
If you're worried about being bitten by the cat's teeth when giving medicine directly with your hand, you can use a medicine feeder. To use the feeder, first, pull back the feeder and place the tablet in the front slot. Next, secure the cat and slightly raise its head to about a 45-degree angle. Use your index and thumb to open the cat's mouth, insert the feeder deep into the cat's oral cavity, and press the button to drop the tablet into the cat's mouth. Be sure to feed the medicine quickly and accurately into the cat's throat. Release the feeder when the cat starts licking its nose, indicating that the medicine has been swallowed.
- Mixing Medicine into the Cat's Favorite Food
If the cat refuses to swallow the tablet or spits it out, you can grind the medicine into a powder and mix it into the cat's usual food, such as cat food, cat treats, or goat's milk. For liquid medicine, you can simply add it to the cat's food, making sure the cat doesn't notice.
- Administering Medicine with a Syringe without a Needle
If the medicine is in liquid form and the dosage is high, you can use a syringe without a needle to give it to the cat. To do this, slightly open the cat's mouth, place the syringe at the corner of its mouth, and slowly feed the medicine. Be careful not to choke the cat. If you can't operate the syringe properly, it's recommended to take the cat to a pet hospital for assistance.
