What to do if your dog has a miscarriage

Immediately seek medical attention: When a dog shows symptoms of a miscarriage, the owner should take the dog to a veterinary hospital immediately. Help the dog expel the dead fetus from the uterus in a timely manner, and then give the dog some anti-inflammatory and antibacterial drugs to prevent infection and inflammation. If the remaining debris in the uterus is not expelled promptly after the miscarriage, it is likely to cause inflammation or even pyometra. In this case, the uterus should be rinsed with a 3% boric acid solution and antibiotics inserted into the uterus. In severe cases, a uterineectomy may be necessary.

  1. Seek medical attention immediately

After a dog has a miscarriage, the owner should take the dog to a pet hospital as soon as possible. Clean up the remaining debris in the uterus in a timely manner, and give the dog antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs according to the dog's condition. If the condition is severe, pain relief may also be necessary. Improper handling can easily lead to inflammation of the uterus or even pyometra, making treatment more difficult.

  1. Investigate the cause

The cause of many dog miscarriages cannot be determined, but this does not affect the dog's future breeding. If the cause can be identified, symptomatic treatment can be chosen. If the cause cannot be determined, symptomatic treatment and supportive care are usually used. If there are still viable fetuses in the dog's abdomen, pregnancy can be allowed to continue. If there are no remaining fetuses, oxytocin can be used to promote the expulsion of uterine contents. In some cases, antibiotics may be needed, and in severe cases, a uterine-ovarianectomy may be necessary.

  1. Precautions after miscarriage

After a dog has a miscarriage, the owner needs to pay attention to proper care, supplement the dog's nutrition, keep the dog warm, maintain clean and dry living conditions, and prevent bacterial proliferation and infection to avoid complications.
