What to do if a small dog is afraid to go outside

A small dog's fear of going outside usually stems from its unfamiliarity with the outside environment and its timidity and fear. Therefore, it is recommended that the owner spend more time interacting and playing with the dog, closening the distance between them. The owner can then carry the dog outside or use treats to lure it outside, gradually helping the dog accept the outside environment. Additionally, trying to let the small dog interact with other dogs can help make its personality more active.

  1. Using Treats to Lure the Dog Outside

    • The first time you take a small dog outside, they may be scared because of the unknown outside world. At this time, it is recommended that the owner open the door and let the dog stand at the door to adapt for a few minutes. During this time, the owner can interact and play with the dog, which helps to alleviate the dog's nervousness.

    • Once the dog's mood has improved, the owner can use treats to tempt the dog outside. Once the dog steps outside, give it a food reward. If the dog doesn't resist, you can also directly carry it outside.

    • Once the dog is willing to walk outside on its own, the owner can use toys to accompany the dog in outdoor play, gradually making the dog willing to go outside.

  2. Socializing with Other Dogs

Dogs also need to socialize with each other. So, after the small dog is willing to go outside, the owner can take it to play with other healthy dogs. This helps to enhance the dog's social skills, make its personality more lively, and enrich its life.
