How to solve dog motion sickness

Dog motion sickness has different solutions depending on the severity. First, when the dog only has mild motion sickness, it may show signs of depression or emotional instability. In this case, the owner just needs to stop the car and let the dog rest for about 1-2 hours, which can usually alleviate the symptoms. Secondly, when the dog's motion sickness is more severe, it may also vomit. The owner needs to stop the car immediately and not feed the dog until it recovers. Generally, there will be a significant improvement the next day. If the dog's symptoms do not improve significantly by the second day, it is advisable to take the dog to the pet hospital as soon as possible.

To reduce the frequency and severity of dog motion sickness, owners can also take the following precautions:

  1. Fasting and dehydration

Before the dog rides in the car, the owner needs to prepare the dog for fasting and dehydration to reduce discomfort during the ride. This can effectively reduce vomiting reactions after motion sickness. Also, prepare items like tissues and plastic bags for emergencies.

  1. Drug assistance

If the dog is known to suffer from motion sickness, the owner can buy motion sickness medication from the pet hospital in advance. Give the dog the medication before the ride to keep it calm and alleviate symptoms. Additionally, prepare some ginger or orange peels and let the dog smell them when motion sickness occurs. This can also help alleviate symptoms slightly.

Do not give the dog human motion sickness medication, as it can have a greater impact on the dog.

  1. Ventilation

After the dog experiences motion sickness, the owner should stop the car and let the dog breathe fresh air. If it's not possible to stop, roll down the window and let the dog lean out to breathe more fresh air. Be cautious not to let the dog fall out of the window.

When the dog rides in a car for the first time, the owner can drive slowly to help the dog adapt quickly. If the dog vomits, stop the car and clear any foreign objects from its mouth.

Note: If the dog always gets motion sickness when riding in a car, it is not recommended to drive with the dog. This will only exacerbate the dog's stress response.
