How to squeeze an Alaskan dog's anal glands

All dogs have anal glands, located at the 4 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions, squeezed upwards from the bottom. Anal glands require regular cleaning, otherwise they may easily lead to anal gland inflammation, anal blockage, or constipation. Generally, dogs need to have their anal glands squeezed once or twice a week. However, proper technique, hygiene, and disinfection should be practiced during the procedure.

What does an Alaskan dog's anal gland look like when it needs to be squeezed?

Dogs usually do not show obvious symptoms or signs when their anal glands need to be squeezed. If there is redness and swelling around the anus, it could be due to anal gland or perianal diseases. Therefore, there are usually no symptoms when it's time to squeeze the anal glands. The squeezing cycle is generally between one and two weeks. If the amount of material squeezed is relatively small every week, consider waiting longer between squeezes.

What happens if an Alaskan dog's anal glands are not squeezed?

The normal color of the anal gland secretion is yellow and has a fishy smell. The frequency of squeezing anal glands varies depending on the dog's physical condition. The anal glands are located at the 4 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions below the dog's anus. If a dog's anal glands are not squeezed for a long time, the accumulated secretions may cause inflammation and even infection or perforation in severe cases. Therefore, it is recommended to squeeze the anal glands regularly.
