What to do if your dog's anal gland ruptures

Introduction

A ruptured dog anal gland indicates that the anal gland inflammation is severe. In this case, it is recommended that the owner take the dog to a pet hospital for treatment in a timely manner. If the damage is not severe, you only need to squeeze out the fluid inside the anal gland first, then clean and inject it closed. Finally, give the dog oral antibiotics daily. However, if the condition is more severe, surgical treatment is required. The anal gland skin is incised, the wound is debrided and sutured, and then medicated and given oral antibiotics.

The treatment for a dog's anal gland inflammation with a hole is as follows:

  1. First, squeeze out the remaining anal gland fluid to prevent it from blocking the anal sac and causing further damage.

  2. If the hole is inflamed, use hydrogen peroxide to wash the affected area, then wash with metronidazole to clean the wound.

  3. Apply a wound healing gel locally to help the wound heal.

  4. Conduct a systemic antibiotic treatment to control the inflammatory response.

The steps to squeeze your dog's anal gland are as follows:

  1. First, find the location of the anal gland, which is usually at the 3 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions. If the gland has not been squeezed for a long time, you can feel a slightly swollen gland.

  2. Secondly, control the force properly. Generally, gently squeeze along with the frequency of the dog's anal movement, and pay attention to the nature of the anal gland fluid being squeezed out. If it is dark, it may indicate a mild infection or a long time without squeezing the anal gland.
