How to treat feline mastitis at home
If you want to treat feline mastitis at home, it is generally recommended to use drugs containing amoxicillin and clavulanic acid for inflammatory treatment, and apply hot towels to alleviate swelling and pain. However, these methods are only suitable for mild cases of feline mastitis. If there is a purulent discharge from the inflamed breast, it is advised to consult a veterinarian in time, and generally require antimicrobial treatment via intravenous drip. During the treatment, cats should be fed a low-protein diet.
- How to treat acute feline mastitis
Acute feline mastitis is generally treated symptomatically. To alleviate inflammation, antibiotics and glucocorticoids can be used, and sometimes petrolatum cream can be applied around the breasts to dissipate inflammation. If there is pus, find the drainage site to evacuate the pus, clean the wound after draining the pus, and apply medication afterwards.
- Can feline mastitis heal itself?
Feline mastitis generally does not heal by itself and is likely to worsen over time. Long-term inflammation may even lead to mammary tumors. Treatment for mastitis is relatively mature, and the prognosis is good. The main principles of treatment are to control infection and provide symptomatic support. Furthermore, mastitis may be related to endocrine disorders. If not for breeding purposes, it is advised to have your cat sterilized at a pet hospital in a timely manner.
