Round belly in kittens

A round belly in a kitten may be caused by overfeeding, parasite infection, or feline infectious peritonitis. Here are the possible reasons:

  1. Overfeeding

Kitten's gastrointestinal function is weak, and they are prone to indigestion. If the round belly appears after a meal, it may be due to overeating, causing abdominal enlargement. This condition usually doesn't last long and can disappear within a couple of days by controlling food intake. You can also feed the kitten with appropriate probiotics to promote gastrointestinal peristalsis and aid in digestion. Remember to feed the kitten on a regular schedule and in appropriate amounts.

  1. Parasite infection

If the kitten has a round belly but a thin body, it may be infected with internal parasites. Kittens with parasites usually show symptoms like diarrhea, weight loss, and worm-containing feces. If you notice these signs, consult a veterinarian and choose safe and effective deworming drugs for the kitten. Remember to worm the kitten every three months and apply external dewormers monthly.

  1. Feline infectious peritonitis

If you can feel a significant pulsation when touching the kitten's abdomen, it is likely to be infected with feline infectious peritonitis. This condition is accompanied by symptoms like lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, and increased body temperature. It is recommended to take the kitten to the vet for an abdominal examination, which will reveal a noticeable pulsation. An abdominal ultrasound can also be performed, and treatment with diuretic drugs should be administered.

Keep in mind that this is only a translation and not a diagnosis. If your kitten exhibits any of these symptoms, it is essential to consult a veterinarian immediately.
