Symptoms of Parasites in Cats
Cat parasites can be divided into external and internal parasites, and the clinical manifestations of different parasite infections vary. When a cat has internal parasites, it may show symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and malnutrition. When a cat has external parasites, it may exhibit discomfort symptoms such as itching, frequent scratching, and dandruff. Additionally, some blood parasites can cause cats to become thin and lethargic. It is recommended for owners to regularly deworm their cats monthly.
External Parasites on Cats
Common external parasites on cats include fleas, lice, and mites, which can cause itching and may even lead to skin diseases in severe cases.
When a cat is infected with fleas or lice, it may show symptoms such as frequent scratching, flea droppings in the hair, or even visible parasites. Dandruff may also fall off.
When a cat is infected with mites, it may experience skin itching, redness, and hair loss. Generally, this condition will be complicated by bacterial infections due to the cat's scratching.
Note: External deworming for cats is recommended monthly, as even if the cat does not go outside, it may still contact parasites from the owner's shoes, clothes, etc., upon their return from outside.
Internal Parasites in Cats
Common internal parasites in cats include roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, coccidia, trichomonads, and giardia. They can cause diarrhea, egg excretion, and other symptoms.
If a cat is infected with roundworms, tapeworms, or hookworms, it may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal distension, weight loss, and anemia. In severe cases, the cat may even pass worms in its stool, causing intestinal obstruction or neuritis.
If a cat is infected with coccidia, trichomonads, or giardia, it may pass bloody, sticky, and smelly stools containing mucus, paste-like or semi-solid matter.
Note: Kittens under six months old should be dewormed monthly, while cats six months and older should be dewormed every three months.
