What are the reasons for a dog rubbing its butt?
A dog rubbing its butt is generally due to discomfort in the anal area, which may be caused by inflammation of the anal glands, parasite infection, feces sticking to the body, tumors near the anus, imitation, or abnormal bowel movements. If the owner notices that their dog is frequently rubbing its butt, they should pay attention and, if necessary, take the dog to the vet for inspection and treatment. Ignoring the behavior can have significant impacts on the dog.
- Anal gland inflammation
If a dog walks with its butt dragging on the ground and rubs its butt back and forth, and licks the area around its anus, it is likely that the dog's anal glands are inflamed, causing discomfort and pain. To alleviate the physical discomfort, the dog will behave like this. It is recommended that the owner squeeze the dog's anal glands once a month and pay attention to the dog's diet, avoiding giving it human food or overly salty dishes, which can help reduce the likelihood of anal gland inflammation.
- Parasite infection
If the owner does not regularly deworm their dog, it is prone to parasite infection. The dog will feel itchy and uncomfortable, leading it to rub its butt on the ground. The owner can observe whether there are eggs in the dog's feces; if so, it may be due to an internal parasite infection. It is recommended that the owner administer an internal dewormer every three months and an external dewormer every month to reduce the dog's butt-rubbing behavior.
- Feces stuck to the body
Dogs cannot clean themselves like cats by licking their butts, so when there is feces or something else on their butt that causes discomfort, they will rub their butt to clean it, especially in dogs with long hair or those experiencing diarrhea. After the dog finishes defecating, it is recommended that the owner wipe the dog's butt with paper to keep it clean and prevent it from rubbing dirty substances onto furniture or bedding.
- Tumor near the anus
If a dog suddenly starts to love rubbing its butt on the ground and its mental state is not good, it is time to be alert, as it may be caused by a tumor near the anal gland. It is recommended that the owner take the dog to the vet as soon as possible. If the tumor is confirmed, surgery should be scheduled promptly to avoid affecting the dog's lifespan.
- Imitation
Some smart dogs learn quickly and may imitate other dogs who rub their butts on the ground, eventually forming a habit. If this is the case, the owner should promptly stop the behavior, as a raw butt can be very painful.
- Abnormal bowel movements
If a dog has abnormal bowel movements, such as constipation or diarrhea, which cause discomfort in the anal area, it will also rub its butt to alleviate the pain. Therefore, owners should pay attention to their dog's bowel movements. If diarrhea or constipation is noticed, address it promptly.
