What to do if a kitten has a sneezing and runny nose

When a kitten has a sneezing and runny nose, the owner should first take measures to keep the kitten warm, and then take the kitten to a pet hospital for screening to determine the cause of the illness. Then, appropriate treatment measures should be taken according to the cause.

Firstly, if the sneezing and runny nose are caused by a cold, the owner should feed the kitten with pet-specific cold medicine and keep it warm. Secondly, if the sneezing and runny nose are caused by feline upper respiratory tract infection, the kitten should be treated as soon as possible. The treatment mainly consists of using antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and other symptomatic drugs.

  1. Sneezing and runny nose caused by a cold

If a kitten has a simple sneezing and runny nose, and its mental state is good, it may be suffering from a cold. In this case, the kitten's mucus is usually transparent and may have symptoms such as nasal congestion, but usually without a fever. The owner can consult a pet doctor and give the kitten some pet-specific cold medicine, while ensuring it stays warm. Generally, the kitten will recover in about a week.

  1. Sneezing and runny nose caused by feline upper respiratory tract infection

If a kitten has frequent sneezing and runny nose, with thick, yellowish-green mucus, and accompanied by high fever, watery eyes, loss of appetite, and depression, it is likely infected with feline upper respiratory tract infection. The owner should take the kitten to a pet hospital for professional treatment as soon as possible. During treatment, drugs containing lysine can be chosen to inhibit the replication of the feline upper respiratory tract infection virus, and antibiotics such as amoxicillin can be used to prevent secondary bacterial infections. The kitten's eyes should be cleaned with saline daily, and treatment with eye drops containing acyclovir is recommended.

Note: The initial symptoms of feline upper respiratory tract infection are similar to those of a cold, and it can be misdiagnosed as a cold. Therefore, owners must pay attention to it.
